Shock Collars For Dogs…Do They Work?

There are 2 types of dog training methods…Positive reinforcement and negative or punishment training. Positive reinforcement involves offering praise or a reward for the dog completing the task while punishment training is letting the dog know that the task was not completed properly. The latter is where shock collars become an effective tool if used properly.

I am sure you have either been told or read online that shock collars for dogs are nothing more than torture devices and that they are cruel…This is simply not true. Many things can be used improperly and be considered cruel…Again…If used properly electronic collars can be an effective training tool that can be used to keep your dog safe and happy. Dogs need boundaries and limits and these collars can aid in teaching them quickly.

How To Use A Shock Collar Properly

IMPORTANT: Never use the shock collar for potty training…This could lead to health issues if your dog was to feel relieving themselves was a bad thing.

The ideal first step is to put the collar on your dog and allow him to adjust…This may take a day or two…The goal is to allow the dog to forget he has something new or different around his neck. The next step is to find the lowest shock level that your dog reacts to…this can be on the lowest setting or more in the middle depending on the breed and size of your dog. You should look for a reaction from your dog (what was that?) not a yelp…If this happens the setting is too strong.

The basic premise of shock collar training is for the dog to associate a behavior with a negative feeling. An example is if your dog likes to dig holes in the backyard and you want him or her to stop. When you see your dog start to dig you immediately give them a shock…They will the associate digging with a negative feeling and stop. The important thing to make this successful is you need to be able to administer the shock as soon as they begin digging so they immediately make the connection between digging and the shock. I am speaking from personal experience as my Golden Retriever loved to dig…In one day I was able to completely stop this problem with the shock collar. Now it may involve sneaking around and watching to catch them starting to dig to be successful.

The same technique can be used to teach a dog how to come when they are called. When teaching this the first step is to make sure the dog knows the command. Teach them by tying rope or a long leash to their regular collar and giving them the command “come here” or whatever you use (be sure to use the same words every time) then pull them towards you…offer a lot of praise when they get into your arms. After a few days of this procedure the dog should know what you want from them when you give them the command of “come here”. This is where you can start using the shock collar for dogs. If your dog knows the command but is deciding not to do it you can give them a shock about 2 or 3 seconds after they have ignored the command…Then they will associate not obeying your command with a negative feeling…This will be almost instantaneous if done properly. This is the method to follow for almost any command your dog ignores but the most important point to remember is the shock needs to be almost immediately after the command is ignored…This way the dogs associates the ignoring of the command with the negative feeling from the shock.

1)      Allow your dog to get used to the collar for a couple days

2)      Find the level that “buzzes” the dog not makes them yelp

3)      For unwanted behaviour (like digging) you need to catch your dog in the act as soon as they begin

4)      For teaching commands you must be sure your dog knows what you are asking them to do or else they will not associate the shock with                  ignoring your command…They will just be confused.

5)      The shock must come almost immediately after you notice they are choosing not to obey your command

Shock collars for dogs are not the torture devices some people make them out to be. They can speed up the training process so your dog can be kept safe and happy when used properly. If they are used improperly by frustrated owners then they become nothing more than an electric rolled up newspaper that has your dog confused and fearful. When these steps are followed properly most owners do not need to use the shock collar for more than 2 or 3 months as their dogs are fully trained and ready to please.
